WHAT MENTAL HEALTH IS ABOUT
Let us have a brief talk on what mental health is about.
Mental health, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community"
It also includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
It is “more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.” Peak mental health is about not only avoiding active conditions that can produce stress but also looking after ongoing wellness and happiness.Having a sound mental health goes beyond the circumstance around us such as unemployment,low income and so on but also each person attitude,behaviour ,coping mechanism adopted to live a better life.
In Nigeria, one in four person (like 50million people)is/are suffering from some sort of mental illness (WHO)
When most comes across the word mental health,what really comes to their mind is mental mental illness/disorder but there is a clear distinct between these two.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), mental illness refers to “conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, or behaviour" These can include but aren’t limited to depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia.
Everyone has some risk of developing a mental health disorder, no matter their age, sex, income, or ethnicity. Therefore,mental health and physical health are equally important component of overall health and should have the same priority.
